The World of Nutrigenomics – Science and Health

It sounds like science fiction. Nutrigenomics, combining genetics and nutrition to produce the ideal nutritional soup on which to feed mankind! Yet, believe it or not, that day has come.

However, it’s not that bad. If you don’t like soup you can have chicken, or a steak, and even a burger: if your genes agree! One of the benefits of the Human Genome Project when it was completed two years early in 2003 (shows we aren’t as complex as we think we are) is that our genetic structure can be related to our optimum nutrition. That isn’t to say that there is a big sign saying ” No Broccoli” (sorry kids), but that certain molecular structures in our food are more compatible with the structure of those of our genes responsible for digestion and absorption of the nutrients in our food.

This sort of thing was first noticed in 1945 and later, when Japanese brought to the USA became obese on the American diet. They became more suited to the Sumo ring than a prison cell or wherever else they were deployed. The same is true of the Eskimos, or Inuits, who did not become obese on their normal diet of whale blubber and seal meat, full of fats of one particular type, but did on a diet of American burgers and other fast foods, full of fats of a genetically different type.

Although the reason was basically known to scientists, they could never prove it, but now the unraveling of the human genome provides that proof: it is connected with the genes. So how does that affect you? In fact it affects you more than you might believe because this is the new era of genetic science, thanks to the Genome Project. We are entering an age when your diet might be determined by genetic analysis.

It sounds like science fiction to send a sample of your DNA using a swab from your cheeks, to a laboratory and have them send you back your ideal supplement program. Yet that is what is happening today, as you read this, and the concept is fact: a fact that is supported by eminent scientists and that is expected to be the norm before too long.

If you are too fat your doctor will take a DNA sample from you and come back with your ideal diet. You might have to eat more fat or less fat, more carbs or less carbs. Think on it for a moment. Take a few minutes and think of the fad diets that some swore by and others claimed were scams. They worked for a lot of people, but were also useless for just as many more. The Atkins diet, the eggs diet, the South Beach diet. Perhaps both sides of the argument were correct.

It is becoming increasingly clear to the biochemists and geneticists that the Genome Project is providing answers to these questions. It could be that those finding Atkins ideal for them have the genetic architecture needed for it to work, but others did not. What’s the betting that the Atkins group never ate such foods as part of their regular diet?

In the same way, what’s the betting that those finding the Atkins diet useless are well used to a diet of bacon and eggs, grilled steaks and the like. The same applies to all the other diets out there: it’s now clear that what works for one does not work for all – it depends on your genetic architecture.

So where do nutrigenomics come into all of this? By using nutrigenomics, a sample of your DNA can be used to determine the best nutritional supplement for you personally, and even suggest the best type of diet for you. The latter is more difficult, but can be done by the experts. However, nutritionists can determine the best dietary supplement for you from your DNA profile. Simply provide a DNA sample and wait for the information that will allow you not only to lose weight, but also to make the best nutritional use of the food that you eat.

Genetics has gone a long way since Crick and Watson discovered the structure of DNA, and the completion of the human genome mapping completed the work that they began. Now it is the turn of the geneticists and the nutritionists to take it all one step further: to use our genetic architecture to maintain our health and prolong our lives through a nutritional program laser targeted to the demands of our genes.
